About the school

Our school was erected in the inner town of Bruges in 1890. There is a primary school (for children from 7 to 12 years old) and a secondary school (for pupils from 12 to 18 years old). The latter is divided into 3 degrees: three times 2 years. In the 1st degree (12-14 years) the pupils can choose between the ‘grammar-school’ (with Latin and/or Greek) or the ‘modern school’ (modern languages). In the 2nd degree (14-16 years) of the grammar school the course can be combined with extended mathematics, the modern school with economics and/or extended mathematics. In the 3rd degree (16-18 years) there are some more specialized subjects and there is more science.

The whole school is meant to be a preparation for further studies (master or bachelor).

In each of the 6 years the pupils have got 2 or 3 periods of examination (at Christmas, sometimes at Easter and at the end of the school year). If the students can go up and which course they can or have to take depends on their school results.

About Bruges

Bruges is a little town 20 kilometres away from the North sea, 45 km from Ghent and 100 km from Brussels. In the inner town there are about 20.000 inhabitants, the urban agglomeration included there are 120.000. There are lots of remains from the middle ages (belfry, town hall, ‘beguinage’, town-gates, churches, medieval houses, …) and the glamour of Bruges consists also of the canals that traverse the whole town. That’s why Bruges is called ‘Venice of the North’. In 2002 Bruges was cultural capital city of Europe.

Experience in exchange projects

Since 22 years there have been different kinds of exchanges with schools from the North of France. During the last 1

5 years there has been European Comenius projects with France, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Hungry and Italy for all the pupils of the 1st class of the 2nd degree. All our pupils of this year work on the theme of the year. In May some of our pupils can go abroad to tell/learn about the results of the work during the year. At the same time, some pupils from partner schools come to our school to do the same.
