About Aalten:

Aalten is a municipality in the eastern Netherlands, less then two hours driving from Amsterdam.
The former municipality of Dinxperlo has been merged with Aalten on January 1, 2005.

Aalten
The source of the town Aalten lies in the middle of the 8th century during the time when emperor Karl the Great overpowerd the region. All communities in the region were comitted to deliver a place for building a church. As far as it can be determined the first church in Aalten was built on the ground from the Ahof farmhouse, today known as the Pol. The churchplaces Aloadon and also Althning are built here and are named for the first time in 1152, including Bredevoort en Dinxperlo.

Bredevoort
In 1818 the stronghold town Bredevoort became a part of Aalten. The name Bredevoort is derived from the word voorde which originally meant “passage” or ford. Bredevoort has a long history and came under control of the Earl of Gelre in 1326 . In 1388 Bredevoort received town rights.
The States of Gelre gave the Manor to King Stadholder Willem III in 1696. So the Manor, in its entirety, came in to the possession of the Nassaus. One of the titles of Queen Beatrix is still “Lady of Bredevoort”, because of this.

Dinxperlo
Dinxperlo was mentioned the first time in 1260, but it is very possible that centuries before already farms were settled in the area in the east of current Dinxperlo. In the 11th century Dinxperlo belonged to the Earl of Lohn and in the 14th century it became part of Bredevoort.
Dinxperlo was ruined after World War II.
The borderline between Dinxperlo and the German village Suderwick is very special. The dutch-german borderline crosses many ground so that some of the houses can only be reached from “the other country”. One street is still separated by the borderline.

Living and business
Aalten offers attractive housing and a pleasant living climate, as wel as considerable potential for the establishment of business locations.

Nature, Recreation and Tourism
Aalten is one of the greenest villages in the Netherlands. The peace and nature of Aalten’s landscape is beautiful. No matter where you are in Aalten, a beautiful green spot is never far away.
